The 15-minute desk audit
Before you buy, write down the problem, test what you already own, and turn the results into a short compatibility list.
1. Name one failure
Record what stops working, when it happens, and which devices are affected. “Video calls freeze on Wi-Fi in the back room” is useful. “The internet is bad” is not yet a shopping brief. Repeat the same task near the router and, if possible, over an existing Ethernet connection.
2. Inventory your connections
Write down the exact laptop model, operating-system version, monitor inputs and desired resolution/refresh rate, router ports, and any wired peripherals. Look up your laptop’s port capabilities in its manual; the shape of USB-C alone does not tell you whether video, charging, or a given data speed is supported.
3. Record power needs
For each device, note its required adapter or charger output from the official manual. For a shared USB-C charger, list the devices that must charge at the same time. For a UPS, use measured normal and peak load or manufacturer sizing guidance; adapter labels are not a reliable runtime measurement.
4. Make the physical layout work
Measure cable routes, including slack for moving a laptop or adjusting a monitor. Count grounded wall receptacles and adapter spacing. Keep airflow clear, avoid pinching cables, and do not route extension cords under rugs or connect power strips in a chain. Stop using damaged cables or hot/discolored outlets and seek qualified help.
5. Write your acceptance test
Define success before opening a store page: one monitor at the intended mode, stable wired connection, two devices charging at the required outputs, or enough backup time for orderly shutdown. Check the seller’s return conditions and test the complete setup within that window. Keep existing equipment until the replacement passes.

This checklist stays on the page; it does not collect or submit your answers.
